Happy Thursday, folks. Have Amelia Earhart, a Lockheed Electra, and a car. Maybe you can tell me about the car.

It’s a Cord. The body dies for which were later used to attempt to save the dying Hupmobile brand name and Graham-Paige.

I do love those Cords with the side strakes.

Cord f ront wheel d rive Coffin Nose, can’t tell if it is supercharged, 810 or 812 was the model.  Fun fact the transaxle from Cord 810s were used in Tuckers.

A friend of my dad once knew someone with a wealthy parent who, the story goes, borrowed said parent’s Cord without permission and wrecked it. I supposed this would have been back around 1970. What a waste, no?

The “earhart-endorsed” years of Terraplane are highly distinctive in appearance - the page doesn’t really make clear how much:

Coffin nose? Well, that’s ironic.

VA front license plate is unfortunate.

In other things Virginian, how many Virginians does it take to change a lightbulb? Ten--one to change it, and nine to talk about how good the old one was.

Don’t know much about the Cord, but here’s a beautifully restored 1937 Electra for sale if you should happen to stumble into $1M anytime soon.

Yes. There are a ton of theories out there, but I believe she and Noonan missed Howland by a few miles at most and bought it when the plane ran out of fuel. Must have been a terrible last hour or so.

I have a buddy who’s been out there on expeditions with TIGHAR multiple times... He says some of the theories of how they missed the island are fascinating. A couple of “minor assumptions” they made probably did them in...

The Wiki article has a discussion about different frequencies (which I don’t understand beyond Earhart and Itasca couldn’t talk to each other) , and the possibility that Earhart simply didn’t know how to use her RDF equipment. Not sure what Noonan’s job was if not to be proficient in the navigation equipment, unless he was purely a map and compass guy.

There is a lot of chatter that Earhart just wasn’t that good a pilot. She was certainly no Jimmy Doolittle. I can’t imagine taking off on such a venture without a thorough knowledge of every system on the a/c, particularly one as critical as the navigational radio.

The TIGHAR theories revolve around her having a bit of hubris and ignoring Noonan’s suggestions (as the better nav and radio guy....) as to how to run the grid pattern to find it when they came into the area just ever so slightly “off”...  That bad guess perpetuated a serious of more and more frantic “wrong direction” guesses, until they ultimately ran out of fuel and ditched.

It’s the only car I’ve ever seen where the mirror is mounted to the door handle. There’s also a Jay Leno’s garage episode on it:
